I work mainly on nineteenth-century British political and cultural history, with research specialisms in the history of popular politics and protest, visual and material culture, and the history of emotions.

I remain passionate about this period of our history and believe that we still have much to learn about it. Whether it's the Luddites, the Chartists, or the lives of artisans and millworkers - groups at the centre of my research and teaching - it is important that we continue to research and study these topics and communicate our findings to a wide range of audiences in the city and beyond.

I regularly deliver talks and workshops to members of the public, and I teach modules at Hallam that give students similar opportunities.
