I specialise in modern European history and the history of the French colonial Empire, especially in the ‘long’ 19th century.

I teach on different modules on the BA History Course: modules on nationalism and borders in modern Europe, on European and American encounters with Asia, and on environment, health and welfare in modern Europe. I also supervise Dissertation students and I very much enjoy helping them find and develop their own interests and see it all come into shape over their final year.

My research focuses mostly on political, environmental and medical history. My current research project is on Franco-Chinese medical encounters in the late 19th century in the French concession of Shangai.
