I did my PhD at Lancaster University and also studied at the University of Edinburgh and the London School of Economics. Before moving to Sheffield Hallam University in 2011, I worked at Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand.

My main academic interests are twentieth century business and financial history, economic policy, and industrial safety. Some of my research is global, exploring commercial and financial networks within the British empire and commonwealth, but I also have an interest in the business history of northern England. My PhD was on the Lancashire cotton industry. More recently, I have been examining technological and organisational aspects of mine safety and rescue on the Yorkshire coalfield.

I regard history as a social science. In seeking to understand the behaviour of groups of humans in the past, I am guided by insights drawn from economics and the organisational disciplines.
